Connecting TikTok, YouTube and Instagram

Publishing requires an authorised connection per platform. Each one is a standard OAuth handoff started from the social accounts screen, but they fail for different reasons and the error you get back is worded generically. This page explains what each platform requires, what the connection badges mean, and how to read a connection that did not take.

Which platforms are available

TikTok, Instagram and YouTube are included with every subscription — no tier restricts them and there is no per-platform surcharge. A $9/month Platform Expansion add-on unlocks six more destinations: Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Threads, X and Bluesky. If the add-on lapses, queued posts aimed at those six destinations are dropped while your base-platform posting continues untouched.

Bluesky is the one exception to the OAuth pattern. It authenticates with a handle and an app password rather than a redirect, so it is entered directly in a dialog instead of sending you to Bluesky and back.

How connecting works

Open Social accounts in the dashboard and choose a platform. Reelsta hands you to that provider, you sign in and grant permission, and the provider returns you to Reelsta with an authorisation. The token is stored against your account and the platform starts showing a Live badge with the handle it resolved.

The authorisation window is intentionally long — an hour — because Google in particular walks you through an account picker, then a channel picker, then a consent screen, and often a two-factor prompt. Taking your time will not break it. Abandoning it and coming back the next day will.

A connection is bound to one Reelsta account. If you try to link a social account that is already attached to a different Reelsta user, the attempt is refused rather than silently moved.

Instagram: Creator or Business only

This is the single most common connection failure, and it is not something Reelsta can work around. Instagram only permits third-party applications to publish to Creator or Business accounts. A Personal account will walk through the whole authorisation and then return without completing.

Reelsta shows a preflight dialog before sending you to Instagram for exactly this reason, and if the connection comes back incomplete the dialog reopens with the likely cause. The switch is free, takes about half a minute in the Instagram app under account settings, and does not change your handle, your followers or your existing posts.

YouTube and TikTok

YouTube has no account-type requirement enforced by Reelsta. Sign in, pick the channel you want published to, and grant upload permission. The only thing worth watching is that Google will ask you to select a channel if your account owns more than one — pick deliberately, because that choice is what the connection is bound to.

TikTok has no account-type requirement either, but as of 6 August 2026 there is an active constraint on the Reelsta side rather than yours: our TikTok application is subject to a platform cap on how many accounts can post through it in a rolling 24-hour period while the app is pending audit. Affected posts are held and retried automatically rather than failing — the video shows a "Waiting on TikTok" marker and publishes once capacity frees up. Nothing is lost and no action is needed from you. If your TikTok account is private, publishing falls back to a more restricted audience setting rather than failing outright.

Reading the connection states

A platform is in one of three states, and only one of them needs you.

Live
Authorised and publishing. The handle Reelsta resolved is shown next to it, which is worth checking if you own more than one account on that platform.
Reconnect needed
The access token expired or was revoked — usually a password change, a permissions review, or the platform ageing the grant out. Reelsta never retries an authorisation failure, because retrying with a dead token cannot succeed. Video generation continues; posting for that platform parks until you reauthorise, and parked posts resume automatically once you do. You get one email about it, not a stream.
Disconnected
You removed it. Any posts already queued for that platform are cancelled outright — this is the one action that discards pending work rather than holding it.

Turning posting off without disconnecting

Each connected account carries its own auto-post switch, separate from the connection itself. Turning it off leaves the authorisation intact and simply stops Reelsta queueing posts to that account, which is the right control if you want to keep a channel linked but quiet for a while. Turning it back on resumes future videos; it does not backfill the ones that were skipped.

Common questions

Instagram sent me back and nothing connected. What went wrong?

Almost always the account is still Personal. Instagram permits third-party publishing to Creator and Business accounts only, and a Personal account completes the sign-in and then returns without granting the publishing permission. Switch the account type in the Instagram app and try again.

Why does one of my platforms say Reconnect needed when I did not change anything?

Access tokens expire on the platform’s schedule, not ours, and a password change or a permissions review on your side revokes them early. Your videos keep being generated while it is disconnected — the posts for that platform wait rather than fail, and they go out once you reauthorise.

Can I connect more than one account on the same platform?

Yes, and each one carries its own auto-post switch. Because posts are bound to a specific channel, Reelsta will hold a post rather than publish it if it cannot prove which of your accounts it belongs to — it would rather be late than post to the wrong channel.

What happens to queued posts if I disconnect an account?

They are cancelled. This differs from a token expiring, where posts park and resume. Disconnecting is treated as a deliberate instruction to stop, so pending posts for that account are discarded rather than held.
